Kanyu River Camp

by Jack Chalker

The transit part of Kanu was tented in a field of lalang grass. Near the tents two Divisional H.Q. Majors were mistaken by the Japanese for medics and were told to build a hospital, this they did for over a month before the error was realised..

Information from Railway of Death by John Coast

The most demanding part of the Death Railway with the largest loss of life was between Konyu and Hintok, the hammer and tap method was used to cut through rock, the guards were very brutal as ``Speedo" was being administered, one such cutting became known as Hellfire Pass.

14 May 1943

Passing through - Most of the track was steep, strenuous up-hill climbing for some miles and I felt my heart pounding under the strain and with mouth open breathed heavily - yes, it was a huge battle. We are staying here for only a few hours and then pushing off again
